Bacchanalia, Baby…

On the ancient Roman calendar, today marks the start of Bacchanalia, the 2-day festival to worship Bacchus, the god of wine and debauchery. To commemorate this auspicious event (and frankly, because it’s Tuesday and not the weekend) I thought I’d invite people to post their favorite drink, drinking game, drinking story (one that involves you personally), or most delicious drink recipe in the comment section below. On Thursday, I will draw three winners at random from all the comments received and each person gets a signed book as a prize. And please be sure to invite your friends to come on over and take part (you’ll see easy-to-use “share” buttons below this post).

So I’ll start things off by talking about my love of Bombay Sapphire gin and tonics. I first heard of Bombay Sapphire after reading Richard Marcinko’s ROGUE WARRIOR books and his love for the gin (which he usually drinks over ice). Already a fan of gin and tonics (but never able to find a gin I really liked) I tried it with Bombay Sapphire and the rest is history – and Lawson’s favorite drink was born. I like a healthy wedge of lime squeezed into the drink (y’know, for fighting off scurvy, lol). First I’ll get a nice pile of ice cubes, pour a good 1/4 to 1/3 Bombay Sapphire over that so it can start to chill, then add the tonic water and finally top it off with the squeeze of lime followed by the lime itself into the glass.

Your turn! Have fun and remember to toast Bacchus!

PS: I’m also looking for questions to fill in over on my FAQ Page so if you’ve got any pressing inquiries about me, my work, my training, my production company – what have ya, feel free to leave a comment below as well. I’ll do a “formal” blog post about more FAQ solicitations, but for now, if you’d rather ask a question, that’s cool, too. And yes, you’re still eligible for the book drawing. 🙂

I have a friend who plays the PSYCH (tv show) drinking game. Anytime Shawn makes an obscure 80’s reference, you drink. Anytime you see a pineapple, you drink, and anytime Gus is introduced as anything but Gus, you drink. By the end of the show she’s totaly hammered.

    That’s a LOT of drinking! lol….thanks Sherry!

My favorite drink is pretty much any Sam Adams beer. The Blackberry Witbier and Cherry Wheat are two of the best, in my opinion. Makes my mouth water just thinking about them!

I love Sam Adams Boston Lager, their Winter Lager, and Summer Ale. I tried their Noble Pils a few weeks back and it was horrible! Really disappointing for me. Another brand I like is stuff from the Wachusett Brewing Company. Their Green Monstah is good stuff!

Well, you can be entered to win anyway, Beth! 🙂 Thanks for dropping by!

First time I ever got drunk it was with Jack Daniels. A buddy of mine and I snitched a bottle and went walking around the neighborhood at night. I remember only about half the trip, the rest is just a blur of stumbling and falling. Ended up back at my house around 11PM and I couldn’t get the front door open. My hand couldn’t seem to operate the complexities of a door knob. My dad heard me rattling the knob and opened the door. Took one look at me and guided me to my bed. Took my shoes off, put a garbage can next to me and said, “Have fun.” Was woken up by my alarm clock at 6AM as I had to go to work. I had a weekend job working at a restaurant/bar/bowling alley establishment. Just the sound of liquid sloshing around in a glass bottle gave me the heaves. Man, that was a load of no fun, let me tell you 😉

Thanks for sharing, Jim! Reminds me of more than few of my own tales, lol…

I got drunk at a bat mitzvah and crashed ANOTHER bat mitzvah happening at the same venue. And guess who I ran into at the other party? Rick Moranis! I complimented the man on his country-western album and just like that I got bounced out of the party.

  • admin March 16, 2010

Wait – Rick Moranis has a Country-Western album, lol? Wow…thanks for sharing Adam! 🙂

Here’s nice selection of gins for experimentation. Everything from the clean-flavored Plymouth Gin to Hendricks, flavored with cucumbers & rose petals. Enjoy! http://www.drinkupny.com/category_s/141.htm

  • admin March 16, 2010

Thanks Jim! I’d like to try Plymouth – heard it’s quite good.

  • Merle Gornick March 16, 2010

lol. I don’t have one for you, Jon, but I wanted to let you know that I visited your site. well….not one that I can recall! 🙂

  • Karen in TN March 16, 2010

I’m afraid that gin isn’t on my favorite list (just can’t get past the smell and it tastes like junipers (then again, that’s what it is). Rum and coke, however, is another story – Bacardi Gold (or better yet, Captain Morgan’s Spiced) and a “real” coke (with sugar, not corn syrup – harder to track down, but they can be found), then add a lime wedge. The only problem is you can forget that they are a mixed drink and forget to stop going.

  • admin March 16, 2010

Doesn’t have to gin, Karen, I only started things off with my personal fave. 🙂 Thanks for chiming in!

    Ha! Thanks Merle!

Halloween of 1994, I crashed a party dressed as a super hero of my creation – Naked Man. Sadly, there is a video out there somewhere that will forever prevent me from entering politics. The looks of people’s faces is priceless.

  • admin March 16, 2010

Oh man, that’s hysterical, dude! A video, too? Wow…

A few years back during hunting season, my wife decided to come up with me to spend time with her friend (and my hunting partner’s wife). We went out to the bar on Saturday night (thankfully in separate cars) and left after a beer and too much noise from the band for our “old ears”. Our wives stayed for the band and the specials on Long Island Iced Teas.

You can already see where this is headed…

So I fall asleep waiting on the couch so that I can sleep on the “outside” of the bed in their guest room so I don’t wake her getting up at 5:00 the next morning. They wake me up with his wife telling me they are really drunk and asking if I was going to sleep in the bed or on the couch. I said the couch and went back to sleep. No sooner am I back to sleep I am woken again with, “Should I have her go to the bathroom before she goes to bed?”

My reply was, “How many children have you raised? You make the call.”

Lucky for her we did not bring home a deer when she was hung over the next morning.

    Good Day Jon!

I Just thought I’d pop again and say hello! 🙂

  • Susan Blaney March 16, 2010

Boybay Sapphire Gin is tasty in a Martini. Never had a hangover with Sapphire. I like my Martini’s dirty. Especially since it’s all about debauchery.
On another note: What’s it like being a NInja? Does it run in the family? Is your Dad a ninja too? How about the kids?

  • admin March 16, 2010

Good story, ZombieJoe! Thanks for sharing!

  • admin March 16, 2010

Hi Susan, yep agreed on the martini front! And no, my father wasn’t a ninja – that started with me. I’m training both my sons as well. But I don’t walk through walls or anything (unless I’m using a door) so it’s not like some Obi Wan Kenobi thing. 🙂 That said, the training is intense and challenging and I love it.

  • Stephen King March 17, 2010

The only question i have about the ninja training is, how often do you don the all black suit and patrol the neighborhood ready to fight crime?
    Admit it, you’ve been tempted.

  • admin March 17, 2010

Not anymore, but let’s just say I took Hide-and-Go-Seek REALLY seriously when I was a lot younger, lol…

  • McCulloch March 17, 2010

headed to a comic/sci fi convention for the weekend, part business part pleasure. The pleasure usually involves Jaegermeister, Single Malt Scotch preferably Glen Morangie, and Guinness. Strangest night ever, wearing a full suit of Star Wars mandalorian armor getting heavily drunk with Jake Busey and friends while he goes on about what an awesome artist I am, surreal night. Watching Starship troopers just aint the same now 🙂

  • admin March 18, 2010

    Ha! Good one Brian!
